A Christmas Carol is a delightful book that's about an old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who was never very jolly, especially around Christmas time. Well, three ghosts came to help him change this, so he didn't end up like his old, selfish, greedy - dead - business partner, Bob Marley; wrapped in chains, sad, regretful.

The Ghost of Christmas Past's purpose is to help Scrooge remember his past at Christmas time, making him relive memories of his childhood and young adulthood, remember all the things that he could have had, everything he could have saved, but was too greedy to want.

The Ghost of Christmas Present's purpose was to express to Scrooge all the things that were happening in the world, while he was sitting in his office being a big grump, keeping to himself selfishly. How he could help out and spread Christmas cheer, the Ghost wanted to explain.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come(Future)'s purpose was to explain what would happen to Ebenezer if he didn't change, if he continued to keep to himself - that he would die a lonely, disliked man with no friends, and a person that would never be mourned or loved because of the things he had done during his past.
After the phantom's visits, Scrooge realized that he still had time before he died, he still had time to change how everybody thought about him, and he could change his personality so he had friends, so he could be a better person.
